About The Block’s Score

When we assess crypto products, we break them down into five key areas: function, cost, benefits, security and usability. Each area highlights something different about how a product performs, from whether it does the basics well to how safe it is to use and whether the rewards are worth the effort. Taken together, these factors give a rounded view of how the product stacks up for everyday users.

Function

Function is about whether a product actually works as advertised and holds up in real use. It looks at how reliable the service is, whether the features work smoothly, and if it does what users reasonably expect without unnecessary complexity. A product that consistently delivers on its promise earns higher marks than one that feels incomplete or unreliable.

Cost

Cost takes into account every way a product might charge you, from explicit fees to less obvious costs like spreads, staking requirements or caps that reduce value. It’s not just about whether something looks cheap at first glance but whether the long-term economics make sense. A card that offers high rewards but comes with steep FX fees or hidden charges won’t score as well as one that is transparent and fair in its pricing.

Benefits

Benefits are the extras that make a product stand out, such as cashback, rewards, discounts or integrations with other services. What matters most is whether these perks are actually usable and valuable, rather than theoretical. High headline rewards that are limited by strict caps or conditions are marked down, while products that consistently deliver tangible benefits to everyday users score higher.

Security

Security is central to any crypto product, so we look at how assets and personal data are protected. This includes whether custody is handled in a responsible way, what safeguards exist against fraud or hacking, and how much transparency there is about where funds are held. Products that take a serious, layered approach to security rate more highly than those that offer little visibility or rely too heavily on marketing claims.

Usability

Usability measures the overall experience of signing up, verifying and using the product day to day. It includes how accessible the product is, whether it works smoothly across regions and platforms, and how clear the user journey feels. A product can have strong features on paper, but if it’s difficult to access or clunky to use, that undermines its value. Ease and consistency of use are what separate average products from those people genuinely stick with.
